Child care givers needed
We are still in need of 2 college students to help out with childcare for the women's Bible study on Wednesday mornings, from 9:30-11. The study runs Feb. 8 to April 18, with the week of Spring Break off. Helping out each week would be preferred, but even part-time would be useful. This is a paid position. Update on Jenna Hewitt
We just got home from an appt with Jenna's neurologist, Dr. Goel. She says it is probable that Jenna has MS. This is based on the fact that if it were post viral the MRI would show more lesions and her symptoms would not respond so well to the IV meds she received over the past week. Jenna will have an MRI done of her spine next Wednesday morning and will have a spinal tap next Friday the 10th. The spinal fluid will be sent to Mayo and we will receive the results the following week.
We are all doing fine. We have always expected it to be MS but have hoped it was post viral and it still could be, but probably isn't. Its OK. We keep remembering that God has "assigned us our portion and our cup". Its what we have been given to deal with, by His power and His grace.

Earlier this week, Jenna came to us and said in class on Monday her face felt like it was drooping and her speech was abnormal as well as her hand being shaky.
Tuesday and Wednesday she felt she was stuttering a bit and didn't have proper hand/eye coordination. She also had difficulty holding her pen and writing her name. Bob and I also noticed her speech was a bit sluggish?
We took her to Covenant on Wednesday and they did a CATscan followed by an MRI on Thursday. The doctor's office called this morning and asked us to come in to meet the doctor to get the results.
We learned that Jenna has 2 lesions on her brain. His first thought is that it is juvenile multiple sclerosis,although this is very unusual. Best case scenario is that is post viral meaning the lesions could be a result from bad cold she had recently. That would mean these symptoms are temporary.
Right now, Jenna is getting the first of 5 IV treatments of solumedrol to kill the inflammation. She will have further test next week to confirm the diagnosis.
We were so thankful to learn it wasn't a brain tumor or cancer or something of that nature. We realize MS is not the best news ever, we consider it a blessing and are praising our merciful God!
Please pray for us as we go throughg this trial, not only for healing but that we will accept this situation we have been placed in and that we will be changed by it, for His glory.

Peg Watson out of surgery
The surgery was successful and she is in recovery with a good prognosis. She will be in the hospital 3-5 days and Steve has requested no visitors for a while and to call him first. Praise God for his goodness.

Dear Church family,
Roland Shelton, former interim Pastor at Walnut Ridge in the year 1975, would appreciate your prayers for himself and his family concerning his terminal illness, decision on continuing treatment, and the Lord's will in his home going.
Their recent 50th wedding anniversary was a blessing with all three boys and their families able to attend even though the party had to be moved to the hospital. Roland is at home now, and his wife Betty is in an assisted living home.
Both sons, Stan and Tony, are back on the foreign mission field.
The Shelton's spent 16 years as missionaries in Austria, and pastored several churches in Iowa. May God continue to bless them as they are faithfully praising God for His goodness.

Marie “Toni” Danielsen, 73, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, December 30, 2011, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. Toni was born December 31, 1937 in Waterloo, the daughter of Cecil & Leona (Spencer) Jacobsen. She married Melvin T. Danielsen July 25, 1959 in Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death May 12, 1987. Toni was employed at John Deere, Valley Park Elementary School, Freeman’s Café, and Personalized Name Plate.
Survivors include her son, Kendil (Carlene) Danielsen, of Cedar Falls; her daughter, Jodi Danielsen, of Readlyn, Iowa; four grandchildren, Shana (Jeremy) Harder, Sherese Danielsen, Shantel Danielsen and Sommer Danielsen; and one great grandson, Henry Perkins Harder.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; her brother, Dennis Jacobsen; and her sister, Carol Blackford.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2012, at Cedar Heights Baptist Church with private burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home & Cremation Service, and for one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday. A memorial fund will be established.

Funeral services for Ronda Froehle's Mom, Mrs. Nancy Stanislav
Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Stanislav, 75, of Spencer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Rev. William Schreiber will officiate the service.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, with the family present from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. A Catholic Vigil Service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday.
A private family burial will take place prior to the funeral services at the church.
Mrs. Stanislav passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name by the family.
Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Update from Jenny Miller
Dear Church Family,
I just thought I'd update you on my progress. I went up to Mayo on November 23 to see a specialist regarding my continuing pain in my knees & issues with not healing as I should. After getting new x-rays, we saw that the fractures in my tibias are only partially healed....and that of course means they are still broken. The doctor told me that if I'm having any pain, I am delaying healing & risking re-injuring what has healed. This means that I need to stop doing many of the things I had been trying to do & rest, rest, rest! (Apparently I've been trying to do too much.) The doctor said it will be months before I am up on my feet again, so I continue to use a wheelchair & crutches all the time. Although this is not what I wanted to hear, at least we know now what is currently going on. Please continue to pray for me & my family.
Also a quick update on my father, Don Champeon: My dad was in the hospital for 10 days with a staph infection in his hand. After a month of IV antibiotics, he is doing much, much better! Thank you for your prayers for him.
Again thank you to all who are praying for us. We know God is good & provides what we need for each day!

Angel Tree
We still have 21 angels on our Angel Tree! A ministry of Prison Fellowship, Angel Tree reaches out to the children and family members of those in prison. At the delivery of these gifts, members of our church share the hope of Jesus with the family and leave gospel material appropriate to the age of the child.
Let's take hold of this opportunity to share and invest in the life of one of these families in our area.

Jordan Holm
Jordan Holm will be speaking to us for a combined Sunday School this coming Sunday, Dec. 4. Jordan was a student at UNI nine years ago, and attended CHBC. Because he was falsely accused of a crime, he spent seven years in prison. He is currently ranked number one as a Greco-Roman wrestler for the US World Team. He will be flying in from Belarus this week and coming to spend a Sunday morning with us. He has a phenomenal Joseph-like testimony ... and in God's providence we will be speaking on Genesis 39 this Sunday, where Joseph is falsely accused of rape. If you were wanting an opportunity to invite someone to church to allow them to hear a clear presentation of the gospel, then you will not want to miss the 9:30 am Sunday School hour.

Update from the Greens in Italy
Below is the letter we received today from Dann and Michele Green:
Just checking in to let you know that Michele and I are with the Jones in Milan. Other than the truck that ran into the back of our car on the way to the airport we had a safe and uneventful trip. We were just glad we were safe and the car was not damaged more than it was.
The weather in Milan is cold and it is foggy all the time. So we are really not getting to see much at all. We have been going with Keith and Debby to all their Bible Studies and English Classes. Its been great to see their family again but also the new church center where the Veritas Church meets.
Last night we had a interesting English Class. Keith invited the class to come and hear and participate in a discussion on what Evangelicals and Catholics believe. We had seven subjects - Biblical authority, Salvation, Mary, Saints, Death & Purgatory, Church & Priests, Church practices. Keith set it up that I would speak regarding the Evangelical view and he would present the Catholic view (with the Catholics in the audience correcting him if they thought he didn't present their view correctly). Debby interpreted for each of us as some didn't know English that well. We started at 7:00 pm and didn't get done till after 10:00 pm. It was quite an amazing and I might add passionate discussion time. There were about 20 people there - with most being Catholic. It is amazing how steeped the Catholics are in their tradition and how the tradition of the catholic church blinds them to Biblical truth and real grace. Today Keith and I worked on some fix up projects on the church facility.
Any way - I thought I'd let you know that Keith and Debby are doing a great job and it was a privilege to be a small part of their ministry for a night.
Keep us in prayer - there is alot of flu going around. I hope we don't catch it here.
On Saturday we will be flying back to Lisbon and I'll be preaching for Evandro on Sunday. Thank the church for supporting us in their prayers. Its been great to see a part of God's work in Italy.

Pastor Dann and Josh have been having valuable times of ministry in Jamaica. Yesterday, they did more painting, ministry at a school of 200 children, visited a special needs school of 80 children/adults with severe special needs, and more visits with local pastors and discipleship.

Pastor Dann called and reported all is going very well in Jamaica. They are busy from the morning till night. They have been having wonderful opportunities, painting, discipleship training, visiting the schools, and meeting with pastors in the area. My father, Don Champeon, who many of you know, was supposed to go to Venezuela on Tuesday, October 4. On Saturday his right pinky finger was swollen; within a few hours, his whole right hand was twice the size of his other hand. By Tuesday morning the end of his finger was turning black & the red swelling was extending up his arm. My parents cancelled their trip to Venezuela. Last night my father had surgery. The doctors cleaned out the infection in his hand. He is currently in the hospital in Maine & will be there for the rest of the week. The infection is very bad & the doctors are hoping they will not have to amputate his finger. They also do not want this infection to travel to the rest of his arm & body. Please pray for him.
A quick update on me: I'm still using a wheelchair or crutches all the time. I still am having a lot of pain in both knees on a daily basis. One of my doctors has referred me to the Mayo Clinic as he wants another opinion. In his experience, he said he feels I should be walking at this point without pain. Another of my doctors feels that I'm progressing very, very slowly & should be doing better - basically back to normal - by February 2012. There is also a possibility of seeking another opinion in New York City, depending on what we find out at Mayo.
So it is still one day at a time. God has been blessing us through this trial, but there are days that are very difficult. We appreciate so much all of you who have been praying for me & my family. I also appreciate the cards & visits & meals more than I can say. I miss being at church & youth group on a regular basis. God is providing what we need & teaching me to trust HIm, regardless of my circumstances. And I have a new appreciation for so many things in my life that I previously took for granted. God is good!

We got some good news regarding Adam.
Adam got off his breathing tube late this morning and is sitting up, talking, and laughing. He will probably get out of ICU later today and will be transferred to the mental health section of the hospital for a little while. Thank you so much for your prayers! It means so much to have the support of our church family. If you think of it, please continue to pray for Adam. As I said before, this is not the first time this has happened, and we continue to be burdened with concern for his well-being...it's hard to continue to be hopeful and trust the Lord in this situation.

Last Thursday night, while celebrating his twenty-first birthday with some friends, Mike Schleusher, a friend of Marty and Scarlet Siebel, fell about twenty feet and landed on his head. Mike is in Iowa City with a broken neck and a bleeding brain. Scarlet isn't sure whether Mike is a believer or not. He's been attending Prairie Lakes recently. His family members are not believers. Pray for wisdom for the surgeons and medical team caring for Mike, for comfort for his parents, and that through this heart-ache, they might come to rely on God for their salvation.

Dear church family,
Please pray for Jason Campbell's brother, Adam. We just found out that he is in the hospital after drinking an entire bottle of alcohol and overdosing on some prescription medication. The doctors pumped his stomach but now cannot get his heart rate to slow down. He has struggled with alcoholism and depression for a few years, and he has been hospitalized many times, but this is the first time there has been a medical problem like this that they can't fix. It is 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night, and I just said goodbye to Jason, as he is driving with his mom and sister down to Des Moines (where Adam lives) to be with Adam at the hospital. Please pray for Adam, for his doctors, and for Jason and his family.

When Carol and I have any reason to think on Cedar Heights, it brings back the warmest and fondest of thoughts! You did that again for us on our 50th Anniversary celebration! Thank you for sending the flowers on the day of the celebration! They were placed on the food table prominently! Carol described them as summer flowers that looked ass thought they had been picked from someone's flower garden. They stayed pretty at our home for days.
It wasn't just flowers, though, so many from Cedar Heights sent cards and kind words of greeting...and the Conrads and Wagners were here.

Prayer Request
My Aunt Holly (my Dad's sister) passed away this morning from complications of cancer. She was only 62. This is the fourth immediate family member that my Dad has lost in a year and a half. Aunt Kathy and Grandpa last year and then Gramma over Easter this year and now Holly. She lived in Pennsylvania so Dad doesn't even know if he can make it out for the funeral (due to the hurricane coming up the East coast and his own health issues). Please pray that the Lord would comfort our family during this time.

My daughter Donna, is in Philadelphia on a business trip. She sent me this message this evening.
" I'm in Philly right now. Experienced the earthquake. Leaving (hopefully) early tomorrow a.m., weather permitting. Hurricane to hit on Sunday, so they've ordered mandatory evacuation just across the river in Jersey. 750,000 people supposed to be evacuated by tomorrow. In Philly, they're telling people to fill up on gas, buying water, getting cash from ATMs, and to stay tuned for any evacuation orders. So say a prayer for me to get safely out of here in the morning, and no flight cancelations, delays or bad weather! "

8th Update Aaron O'Leary
We are so happy to report that tonight at 8:30 (a 24 hour test will be done then) Aaron will be discharged and allowed to go home! So many have asked what we found out, so here is the story: (buckle up, as Aaron would say!)
Aaron had been to physical therapy for some adjustments to his back and torso due to misalignment (possible growth spurt?) and his back was tense that night. The next day he wanted to run the time trials for cross country and thought his back would be OK. At the second mile, his back started to spasm. He chose to keep running and the spasms spread into his chest/torso making it very, very hard to breathe. He felt like his chest was paralyzed. At this point he collapsed and an ambulance was called. When he arrived at the emergency room, his attempts and struggle to breathe looked to the ER doctor like a seizure so he gave him medicine to stop a seizure. He would eventually pass out from not breathing and they thought the medicine had worked. When he came to, he looked like he was having another seizure, so they gave him more seizure medicine. Then he would eventually pass out, come to, look like he was seizuring, more medicine, etc. Finally they called a neurologist who felt they needed more advanced help, Mayo was consulted, they ordered a final dose of powerful seizure medicine and sent their pediatric critical care team to pick him up, thinking he may need to be on a ventilator (life support). By this time he was totally unresponsive.
He arrived at Mayo around 11PM Thursday night and was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. Aaron didn't start to wake up until sometime Friday morning after lots of stimulation - his sternum is still very sore from all the rubbing they do to wake you up. When he woke up he was very amnesiac. The tests started then and have run non-stop since we've been here and we have seen around 10 specialties and scores of doctors. They determined fairly quickly that he did NOT have any seizures. He slowly got more awake into Saturday afternoon when they decided he was stable enough to go to a regular hospital room while they continued testing. We were planning to come home the next day.
At midnight, he was found by the nurse to be unresponsive and not breathing. A "code" was called and they worked for an hour to stablize him before transfering him back to ICU. For about 10 hours after that he didn't remember anything, didn't recognize me (Deb) or remember that he had siblings, played the piano, etc. Around 10:30 Sunday morning he "came out of it" and when the ICU doctor came to check on him, he preached a little sermon to her (a bit disjointed but not bad!) While we were alarmed at what had happened, we didn't anticipate anything but progress to recovery at that time. That evening around 4 PM he had another "episode" - found unresponsive and not breathing. When they called the code this time, they decided not to medicate him at all and just watch him and see what happened. When he reached 45 seconds without breathing they would breathe for him and he would gasp, breathe a little and then stop again. He was more awake this time due to no meds and would struggle to reach his head for the oxygen - like a fish out of water. It was awful to watch. The good thing was that afterwards he didn't have much amnesia and came out of it much quicker. They immediately tested his vocal cords wondering if they were in a spasm but they looked good. He stayed in ICU until last night (Tues) while they watched, tested, etc.
Aaron has had more tests, x-rays, MRIs, scans, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, EKGs, blood work, etc. than you can imagine and everything has come back normal! So, they are thinking that the initial episode was triggered by the severe back spasms and the second 2 episodes as well since his back was so extremely stiff - like a board is how he has described it. The spasms triggered the inability to take a breath, he passed out, etc. This is really, really good news - it could have been so many scary things.
Some of you have heard this, but it bears repeating - We were reminded of the blind man in Scripture about whom the disciples asked, "Who sinned? This man or his parents?" Jesus replied that he was blind so that God could be glorified. If that was the reason for our trial, that God can be glorified, we humbly submit to His will with thanksgiving that He spared Aaron and the realization that He has a plan for this that we may or may not fully realize. Through this, one of Aaron's friends from school has come to know Jesus as his Savior. We are excited to see how He can continue to use this in Aaron's life to bring glory to Him.
This is where you attempt to thank people and words fail. We wish there was a way to fully express our gratitude to our family and friends as we have been completely overwhelmed by your prayers and kindness. We have had many, many opportunites to speak of the power of prayer to the staff here as they have been witness to the "peace that passes understanding". It's not that we were never weak or tired or worried, but God always lifted us up.
Aaron is ready to jump back into school, cross country, band, etc. If you wouldn't mind praying just a bit longer, we need wisdom to know how much he should do as he gets back in the swing of things. Sitting on him is going to be hard! :)

7th Update Aaron O'Leary
I'm so sorry that I have not been better about up-dates on Aaron. We have been in ICU with no cell phone abilities and you don't want to leave the room to find a signal when your child is in ICU! There has been a steady stream of doctors throughout our stay and you don't want to miss any of them.
Today Aaron feels SO much better! He still has memory lapses, but his humor is coming back. He has had extreme muscle stiffness from his body becoming alkalotic during the 3 episodes, but that is improving with physical therapy and medication.
It's now 10PM and I started this up-date at 9AM! This evening they moved him out of ICU and into a regular room. Today they repeated the MRI of his head and spine, specifically looking at blood flow patterns with dye contrast. They also did an ultrasound of his kidneys because his blood pressure is way too high. Last evening, when he was relaxed and happy because they brought him a laptop and he could connect with his friends (!) it was 168/98. They are now testing for a possible adrenal gland problem. We really don't know what the plan is after that and today I was too tired to ask.
This morning, the account of Jesus and his disciples coming upon the blind man came to my mind. They asked, "Who sinned? This man or his parents?" Jesus answered, "Neither, but that God could be glorified." Aaron and I talked about the possibility that this could be the reason for his trial - simply that God could be glorified. We have seen some amazing answers to prayer and we want to share the best one with you. One of Aaron's friends, who he has been witnessing to, received Jesus as his Savior on Sunday! We are overwhelmed that God has used our situation to help bring this young man to Him.
Thank you again for your continued prayers. The staff has commented on our calm and we have been able to explain the grace of God and the peace that passes understanding. Please pray that Aaron doesn't get discouraged. He wants so badly to come home and is very weary of the endless tests. He did comment, though, that even though he's not in school, he's passed every test he's taken!!

6th Update Aaron O'Leary
Just to give an update for Monday, August 22, so you can continue to pray:
As of about 3:00pm he had an uneventful night and day (in a good way). He is still in the ICU to be monitored. The doctors are doing some other types of tests, but have not found the cause yet. It is an encouragement to his parents that their daughter (one of Aaron's sisters) was able to come from Virginia and be there at the hospital with them.

Aaron was improving greatly and many of the tests showed nothing abnormal. But in the night, Aaron stopped breathing and became unresponsive again. He was coded and taken back to the ICU, the doctors just don't know what this is. The O'Learys ask that we continue to pray for Aaron.

4th Update on Aaron O'Leary
Last night he was doing quite a bit better and they were considering bringing him home today or tomorrow although they had not found anything definitive about the cause. Then this morning he had a 45 minute period where he lost all memory of anything. Because of this, they took him to do an MRI of his head. Continue to pray for wisdom as the doctors seek to determine what is causing this and for his family as they rely on God during this time of uncertainty.

Help Needed to Transport
Tina Naami, is in the process of becoming a member here at our church. She is a UNI Teacher and new to the area. She does not own or drive a car and is in need of someone to pick her up and take her home from church. She lives on 3211 Terrace Dr., Apt. 1, Waterloo. This Street is right off of Cedar Heights Dr., heading towards Scenic Dr. and the Hyvee on University.
I am hoping to have a few people on a schedule to help her so if you can only do once a month, that would be wonderful. I will be going to get her until I have a schedule of people but I cannot do it every time. LOVE Inc. (Love in the name of Christ) is an organization that enables churches in a community to coordinate their resources and services so that those in need are not turned away. Pastor Dann and I have seen this organization be extremely effective in Grand Rapids, MI. We are encouraged to see that they have started one here in the Cedar Valley.
Here is a need that came to our attention:
Last week we had two separate families call into the clearinghouse with immediate need for refrigerators. As always when we are faced with requests like this that are beyond our ability to provide, we open it up to our network of supporters and pray that this email will land or be forwarded to someone who may be able to help us help our families in need. So, if you do not have an extra good working refrigerator, please help us cast our net wide and forward this email to your friends and family and in prayer we are confident it will get to someone who does. As always, I will send out an email letting you know when the need has been met so we may give thanks.

It is both a somber and celebratory time for Christ’s
Church. The Lord’s Table is somber in the sense that we are to remember Jesus
Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice for our sin. It was our sin that sent Him to
the cross, and it was our sin upon with which God the Father poured out His
wrath. These thoughts bring about genuine confession in God’s people.
Yet, the Lord’s Table is celebratory in the sense that through
Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and satisfaction of God’s wrath we have been
reconciled to God, and called the righteousness of God, and are in Christ, and
through Jesus’ resurrection we too will be resurrected on the last day, and
commune with Christ forever.
Please come this Sunday prepared for serious reflection, and
jubilant celebration around the Table of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Help Needed in Tama County
'm looking for some volunteers to help with clean up in Tama county on Thursday and Friday. They had severe wind damage in some of the communities. I am still working on finding local contacts for needs. My plan is to meet at CHBC at 8 am on Thursday and around 1 pm on Friday. We should be back on both days between 7 and 9 pm. I think most of the work will be tree cutting, picking up debris, prayer and encouragement.
If you're interested in helping out, please email me at
so I can have an idea of how many people will be going. Kids are welcome to come along and help, but will need an adult to accompany them. If you cannot come but would like to help in some other way, please email me or the church office.
Please remember to lift up the families that have been affected by these storms in prayer, and pray that God would use His people to bring glory to His name through clean up efforts and encouragement.

Yesterday (the 30th) Megan's cousin William was in a bad 4-wheeler accident in Dubuque. They ended up taking him by helicopter to the University Hospital in Iowa City in the afternoon because he wasn't responding like they would have liked him to.
Today (July 1st) he is awake & alert. He has started talking & is able to move his arms & legs. He has no broken bones, internal bleeding or organ damage. They were able to take out the breathing tube. They are probably going to keep him another night just to observe him. His parents drove 8 hours & go to IC late last night & are with him now.
As of now they are saying he just has a sever concussion & will be really sore/bruised for awhile.
This is a miracle of God! The 4-wheeler landed on this young boy & the handle bars were on top on his throat. He wasn't able to move or talk yesterday, only grunt. They thought he crushed his throat, broke his jaw, & that he would have brain damage. We all are just praising God for his protection & healing for William! Our God is amazing!

Her cousin William from Ohio was visiting her parents in Dubuque for the week. He was in a 4-wheeler accident earlier today & was sent to the hospital in Dubuque. She is on her way there & does not have a lot of details, but would like us to be in prayer for this young boy ( I believe he's in 4th or 5th grade). His parents are driving from Ohio right now. Please pray for healing from his injuries, for protection while the family travels to get to the hospital, and for Megan & her family that was/is there with him now.

A Reflection on
Communion
This Sunday we will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper in our
corporate worship service. Let me encourage you to read over I Cor. 11:17-34
this week in order to prepare your hearts and minds as we observe this
important ordinance.
You may be asking, “What’s the big deal about this ordinance
we call ‘Communion’ or ‘the Lord’s Supper’”? Well it’s a big deal because our
Lord tells us to “do this in remembrance of me!” We are to gather corporately and observe this
ordinance regularly until our Lord returns for His church. It is important
because Communion us a visible presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It
is important because Communion emphasizes the fellowship we have with our
Father in Heaven and with each other here on earth through Jesus Christ.
Mark Driscoll provides us with more insights to why we take
the Lord’s Supper seriously and joyously.
“The Lord’s Supper is a dramatic
presentation that (1) reminds us in a powerful manner of the death of Jesus
Christ in our place for our sins;
(2) calls Christians to put our
sin to death in light of the fact that Jesus died for our sins and compels us
to examine ourselves and repent of sin before partaking; (3)
shows the unity of God’s people around the person and work of Jesus; and
(4) anticipates our participation in the
marriage supper of the Lamb when His kingdom comes in its fullness.
Furthermore, it should be an
occasion when God’s loving grace impacts us intensely so that the gospel takes
deeper and deeper root in our lives. Understood biblically, grace is unmerited
favor or God’s goodwill, His helpful enablement for life and service, and a
transformational power from the Spirit that brings blessing to us. Each of
these aspects of God’s grace is inextricably connected to the partaking of Communion.”
So come this Sunday with our minds fixed on Christ and we
will not only hear His gospel but in the Lord’s Supper we will see it as well.

We ask the church family to be in prayer for Rajeane at this time as she is preparing to meet the Lord. She is attempting to travel home from Rochester to be in her home with Hospice's care for her final days. Pray for her and the family as she enters into those final days, that the presence of God would be with her in her suffering. Pray for the family as they will suffer as well.

Just an update on my current situation. I'm seeing some progress in healing in my left leg/knee; it's not at 100% but it is getting closer to where it needs to be. My right leg/knee is still incredibly painful. The pain often wakes me up at night. The doctor says this could be a very long process and I must be patient. I see him again on Monday, June 13. I am not at the point where I can put any weight on either leg. I'm still in bed or in a wheelchair at all times. My parents are still here helping, which is a huge blessing to my family. I know God has lessons for me during this time. I am trying to rely more on His will for my life. He is in control and I know He loves me, but the path is getting long and at times I am discouraged. I do appreciate that people are praying and ask for continued prayers.

Jerry Richard Byers was born on April 8, 1929 in Lucas County, Iowa to Clinton Leland and Beulah Maud Richards Byers. He went to his eternal home after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of eighty-two.
On June 17, 1951 Jerry was united in marriage with Dora Louise Palmer in Russell, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Joleen, Joyce, Janice, Martha, and Bruce.
For twenty-four years Jerry worked for HyVee Food Stores in Oskaloosa, Chariton, and Corning, Iowa. Then the family moved to Pella where he was employed as: owner/operator of Gambles Hardware Store, general manager of the Family Recreation Center (Dutch Buffet, Tulip Lanes, and Skating Rink), electrician for Vanden Berg Electric, and Director of Maintenance and Transportation for the Pella Community Schools.
Jerry was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa and later became a member of Berean Baptist Church in Pella. He enjoyed serving both congregations as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, superintendent, and treasurer. He also served as the church youth leader. He was the past president of Iowa Good Sam's Club, participated in the Torch Run for the Iowa Special Olympics, and volunteered at the Iowa State Fair for fourteen years. He served as president and treasurer of the JayCee's and Rotary Club. Jerry was a member of the Iowa National Guard for eleven years. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. One of Jerry and Louise's favorite past-time was to go camping and traveling through many states.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly sixty years, Louise of Pella; his children: P. Joleen and Lonnie Lee Gerber of Pella, Joyce A. Mattox of Pella, Janice E. and Jeffery S. Rost of Waverly, Martha R. and Rick A. Kindley of Knoxville, and Bruce A. and Pamela J.Sandry Byers of Noble, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his brother and wife, J. Lester and Mary Elaine Byers of Sun City West, Arizona; his two sisters: Vira and the late Ed Whitlock of Piney, Tennessee and Bonnie Faye and Ralph Lang of Dallas, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents: Clinton and Beulah Byers; parents-in-law: Harold and Ruth Palmer all of rural Lucas County.

The men are out on the job early today again. There is a great deal to be done. But the residents have all left and it is hard to get permission to go onto people's property to do the clean up. Pray that the city will be able to get in contact the residents, get the necessary permissions so that the workers can clean them up. Pray for the workers safety. It is still sunny and very hot, but it is windy today which cools them off a little.

The guys have their assignments and are off to work. Pastor Dann said that no picture would accurately portray the devastation there. He asks for our prayers as they go to work and try to do as much as they can in the little time that they will be there. Well at about midnight, they reached their destination and were all ready to rest. They were able to rent a U-Haul to replace the one trailer and a church had donated $300 to be used however their member saw fit. The U-Haul's cost was $290.00 so God provided just what they needed. They will begin working this morning. The temperature will be in the 90's and very humid so be in prayer for all the workers.

The men had to wait for an RV company to come and disconnect the trailer from the van. They were able to disconnect and get the van to the next exit where there was a gas station, a towing company, and a RV company.
The RV company is replacing the tires on the trailer as they had all popped during the episode.
The Van was looked at and only the hitch was damaged which is easy to replace. Meanwhile, a 10' U-Haul was rented so items can be transferred after the damaged trailer is towed out of the median of the Highway. Once the items are transferred, the men will continue on their way.
Everyone is safe. But please continue to pray for them as they have 5+ more hours to drive.

About 1/2 hour after the trailer tire blew, the van began to swerve due to too much weight in the trailer. The driver did an amazing job in keeping control of the van and as it ended up in the median of Highway 35, still south of Des Moines. Everyone is safe and the men are working on the problem. Please be in prayer for a safety and a safe solution to the problem and that the van would not have been damaged and can still be driven.
We continue to ask you all to pray as they have had such a difficult start to the trip to Joplin.

I will be sending out updates as I receive them on the prayer needs and praises from our guys (Josh Lux, Pastor Dann, David Kauten) and the team heading to Joplin, MO.
There were so many donations that loading all the items took more time than expected and so they were off to a bit of a late start this morning, June 1, 2011.
They were just south of Des Moines when a tire blew on one of the trailers. A DOT truck was right behind them, knew that they were the group from Cedar Falls heading to help out at Joplin. They had all the equipment to fix the tire and in 10 minutes they were back on the road.
We thank God for keeping them safe and looking after them with this repair need. Continue to pray for the team. I will send out numbered updates to keep you all informed. Thank you for your prayers and giving to these workers and those in need.

Update on 30 Hour Famine for the Youth:
This year the teens of Innerchange Youth Group raised a total $3,095.50 for World Vision. This year's funds were matched at 6 times the amount! As $1 a day feeds a child, that means many, many children are being fed & helped as a result of our teens' efforts. Over the 5 years our teens have participated in 30 Hour Famine, they have raised $15,281.97 to help children in need! Thank you to the church for your help to accomplish this!

Dear Prayer Warriors,
Just a quick email to ask you to pray for the Niobrara, NE VBS. I just got off the phone with the director and Niobrara is going to impacted by the flooding due to the release of Missouri dam waters. Their VBS is scheduled for next week, June 6-10. Niobrara is surrounded by the Missouri and Niobrara Rivers. The town has been put on alert and are sandbagging. They've been told that there is a great possibility that the east and west roads coming into Niobrara will be completely under water. Travel will be greatly affected. If flooded, the roads will be impassable until December. There are additional gravel routes into Niobrara, but families would have to drive 10-20 miles out of their way to attend the VBS each day. And there is no guarantee that some places on those roads will stay open, either. Needless to say, we need to pray for this small community. Please pray that the Lord's will will be done concerning the VBS and that Satan will not be able to keep children (and teachers) from attending the VBS!

Prayer update on Michelle Manion
Thank you all for praying for me during surgery. The surgery went fine and all the growth was removed. I still have a lot of unanswered questions as to what it was and why it was there. What I’ve been told so far is that at least part of what was removed was dead tissue. The test came back showing that it looks to be rheumatoid arthritis rather than a tumor. I appreciate your continued prayers as I seek to learn more about this and figure out what to do next. My next appointment in Iowa City is June 2. Till then I am getting back on my feet slowly. I’m not in a lot of pain, but the swelling and stiffness is fairly significant. Thanks for all the prayers, cards and meals. My family and I appreciate you all very much!

Hey Everyone,
I wanted to send out a quick email to let everyone know I'm looking for a few guys (5 more) to make a trip down to Joplin, MO with me in the next week or so. My intentions are to leave June 1st and come back by the 4th or 5th. This could change depending on what I hear from Samaritans Purse. At this point, I am the only one going. If you know of anyone that would be interested, please let me know!
This will be a great opportunity for anyone to live out their faith, and share with those in a great time of need. Samaritans Purse is all about sharing Gods love with those who have been struck by disaster by providing emergency supplies and care.
I am also looking to see if anyone would know someone that I could borrow a small covered trailer and a generator from.
Please pray for the people of Joplin, and that God would use the volunteers of Samaritans Purse to impact those suffering.

For those who have not already heard, we are praising God for the amazing way that He sold our house! We are so thankful and blessed that before we even got through our "to-do" list to put it on the market, the Lord sent us a buyer. That is an answer to prayer beyond what we would even think to ask--is God good or what? June 10th is the scheduled closing date so we are in the countdown of final preparations for our move to Whidbey Island. Zechariah continues to recover well from his May 12 surgery. He is feeding normally and seems to be a calm and content little boy. Harold R. Green
Dear Church Family,
My father has finished his battle with Pancreatic Cancer today. He went home to be went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 3:10 am. We are rejoicing with him that his past sufferings are not worth comparing with the present glory he is presently experiencing!
As a family, we are so grateful for the prayers and expressions of love that have sustained and supported us through this time. We have been so blessed with our extended family of faith and know that you will continue to uphold us in the days ahead.
We are in the process of making plans for a special Memorial Service to honor my Father's life and Lord. May the Lord encourage your hearts as you have encouraged ours.

Zechariah Neely Update
Zechariah Neely's surgery went well. He is breathing more on his own and less through the respirator. He did need to receive more morphine for his pain. Elizabeth was able to change his diaper this morning, and Zechariah received Elizabeth's milk though a feeding tube.
John and Elizabeth were blessed to receive a LARGE stack of printed-out emails this afternoon, and they want to thank their church family for their love, support, and prayers.

Prayer for Michelle Manion
I had a long day in Iowa City (3 ½ hours just for one appt), BUT I feel like I got some more confident answers. The mass in my knee does need to be removed ASAP which will be next week. They want to get this out so that it doesn’t cause a grinding or deteriorating of my knee. The good news is that it “looks” to be localized and all on the front. If this is really the case when they get in there, they expect to be able to get all of it with this one surgery and then NOT have it return. We can pray that this really is the case. They plan to do a scope next Friday in Iowa City to pull out the mass. They will then test it to find out exactly what it is. They still expect it to be this PVNS which is where the lining of the knee grows causing pain, swelling, burning, etc; but they think we may have caught it early enough. Until then I am free to walk around as my pain level tolerates. J I still need to take it easy, but I’ve been cleared to try and do some things. J
Thanks for your prayers! Please continue to pray as I head into surgery next week. It would be wonderful if this could be simple and treated with just one surgery.

Update on Neely baby
Elizabeth is currently being discharged from Covenant and will be heading to Iowa City. Zechariah will be having his surgery within the hour (by 1:00). It is a 4-5 hour surgery if everything goes according to the surgeons' plans. They have performed the procedure before, but they have found more concerns- the surgery will be more extensive than thought this morning. John and his mom are with Zechariah, and Elizabeth and her mom will not make it to Iowa City in time to see Zechariah before his procedure. That has been very hard for Elizabeth. Elizabeth is asking that we please pray for peace and trust in this time of storm. She is taking comfort in the fact that God is sovereign over all, but struggles with His plan being different than her own. She also asks that we pray that Elizabeth and her mom make it to Iowa City safely and don't get lost.

Pray for Zechariah Neely
Please be in prayer for Elizabeth and John Neely as they discovered that their baby Zechariah's esophagus is not attached to his stomach and he will be transported to Iowa City for surgery there. They have requested no visitors at this time. Pray for Elizabeth to regain strength after just giving birth and for the care of little Zechariah as they remain in Iowa City for about a week.

On May 21, we will be doing grounds work at River Hills School, from 9am to 1pm. River Hills School is a public sponsored special school for students with moderate, severe, and profound developmental disabilities. The school serves students from birth through age 21. We have adopted this school as our way to reach out in our community. It is located at 2700 Grand Blvd., Cedar Falls - 1 block from our church.
Join us as we show true religion, caring for those who cannot care for themselves, for the “least of these”. It also speaks loudly that as a church, we are about the gospel of Jesus Christ, that we serve without expecting a return and expect no benefit to ourselves - we do it as a reflection of who God is and his heart of compassion for people.
Bring your rakes, carts, gloves, shovels, hedge trimmers and more as we will be spreading mulch, dirt, planting grass seed, edging flower beds, trimming bushes, cutting down trees and raking. There will be a job for all ages. Come and be a blessing and be blessed!

Thank you all for praying for me. I
saw my doctor on Monday. I am not progressing as I had hoped, and will
need to stay bedridden for at least the next 3 weeks. I am not to go
anywhere or do anything at all that would put pressure on my knees and legs.
There was even a discussion of putting me in skilled care in a nursing home for
3 weeks! Thankfully my doctor feels I can stay in my own home. After
3 weeks, we will see what progress I have made and see if I can begin to put
weight on my knees. It is possible that my body is not allowing the
necessary bone reabsorption for healing. If that is the case, we will
have to explore other options in order to get me upright again. I am
grateful for all the meals, calls, cards and support that my church family has
shown me. I am trying not to get discouraged as this has turned into a
much longer and more difficult time than originally anticipated. I know
God is good and that there are lessons for me and my family during this time. I
am humbled by the many kindnesses that have been shown to me and my family. Thank
you so much and please continue to pray for God's will in my healing.

CHBC - We have a yearly opportunity to be active in our community to show the love of Christ. In the past we have participated in Love Cedar Valley but for this year and for the future we desire to adopt River Hills and do two work projects a year. We need YOU! Dear Cedar Heights
Baptist Church,
As people of faith, we
have the opportunity this Thursday to cry out to the One True God on behalf of
our nation. We do not call out generically to the gods of a pluralistic nation
in the midst of their pantheon of gods. Rather, we cry out to the God of the
Scriptures: Yahweh, El Shaddai (Almighty God), the God of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob, the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Will you join with me in praying
to our One True Triune God this Thursday for the National Day of Prayer?

Throughout our history, Americans have

In preparation for the Innerchange Youth Group's Mission Trip to Denver, we are holding a banquet and silent auction on May 14 for the entire church. This will be a fun and informative evening to learn more about what our youth will be doing in Denver, and how you can support them through prayer or finances. The proceeds from the silent auction will also go toward the mission trip. We are in the process of getting donations for the auction from some local businesses that have been generous in the past. If any of you have any items or services that you would like to donate for the auction, we would greatly appreciate it. Communion Preparation
As we prepare
to observe the Lord’s Table this Sunday, I thought I would direct our attention
to a question that we have all asked at one point or another. The question is: I have failed spiritually this week, can I partake
of the Lord's Supper?
Whether we have blown it at work, or
with our spouses, or with our children, or by ourselves when no one else was
looking; we all ask, “Can I really eat worthily at the Lord’s
Table this week?”
First, we all sin everyday of every
week. Nobody brings a successful week to the Lord's Table. Therefore, we bring
to the Table our sin. And that is part of the focus of the Lord’s Table. It is
calling for us to recognize our unworthiness, and Christ’s worthiness.
Second, when
we come to the Lord’s Table, and examine ourselves with the Word of God, we are
called to confess all known sin.
Psalm 19:12–14 (ESV) — Who
can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. 13 Keep back your servant also from
presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be
blameless, and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be
acceptable in your sight, O Lord,
my rock and my redeemer.
We should pray specific confession for specific
sins of which we are aware, we should pray general confession for the sins of
which we are unaware, and the result is that Christ cleanses us by applying His
own blood to us.
1 John 1:9 (ESV) — If we confess our
sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
Third, now that God has assured us of
pardon through Jesus Christ’s work on the cross, we eat of the bread and drink
of the cup in a worthy manner, not because we are worthy in and of ourselves, but
because we have been united by faith to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His blood
cleanses us and declares us worthy.
In light of these truth: what are the specific
sins in our lives that we need to be experiencing brokenness and contrition
over? Have we confessed them to God? If not, now is the time to confess them.
What are the relationships that need to
be mended before we observe the Lord’s Table on Sunday? Now is the time to mend
them.

Jenny Miller has had confirmed that she has fractures in both knees. This will take a long time to heal and is quite painful. She is required to stay off her feet to allow healing. Her parents are with her for a couple more weeks to help with Gabe. But they felt they really could use some help with at least 2 meals per week for the next several weeks. If you desire to minister to the Miller's in this way, please contact the church office (277-3889).

I would appreciate prayers for myself. I have small fractures in the medial tibias of both knees. I'm to stay off my feet as much as possible for 2 weeks. It is also very painful. If I don't allow the tibias to heal, I will have to have surgeries on both knees. The good thing is that we have discovered I'm very prone to injury & will be going to the bone clinic to do more to prevent future injuries. Now I just have to be patient for these 2 weeks...and patience isn't my strong point! My parents will come tomorrow night to be here to help me & care for Gabe. Thank you for your prayers for God's healing.
