Bernard of Clairvaux sang of this cycle. Read
these great words slowly:
We
taste of Thee, O Thou living Bread,
And
long to feast upon Thee still;
We
drink of Thee, the Fountainhead,
And thirst our
souls from Thee to fill.
This Sunday we will meet as a corporate body to taste of the Living Bread,
and drink of our Fountainhead, at the Lord’s Table. It is my sincere desire
that we would examine ourselves before we come to the Lord’s Table; that we,
like the great songwriter King David, would pray;
Psalm 139:23–24
(ESV) — Search me, O God, and know my
heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24
And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
It is both a somber and celebratory time for Christ’s
Church. The Lord’s Table is somber in the sense that we are to remember Jesus
Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice for our sin. It was our sin that sent Him to
the cross, and it was our sin upon with which God the Father poured out His
wrath. These thoughts bring about genuine confession in God’s people.
Yet, the Lord’s Table is celebratory in the sense that through
Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and satisfaction of God’s wrath we have been
reconciled to God, and called the righteousness of God, and are in Christ, and
through Jesus’ resurrection we too will be resurrected on the last day, and
commune with Christ forever.
Please come this Sunday prepared for serious reflection, and
jubilant celebration around the Table of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
